Description

Menopause is something that millions of women experience, yet despite growing awareness, there is still so much misunderstanding surrounding its symptoms and the impact it can have on everyday life, particularly in the workplace.

And it's about so much more than hot flushes.

In this special episode for Menopause Awareness Month, Jodie Fraser welcomes back Shelley Jacobs, Operations Director at MLM, Business Psychologist, Cognitive Behavioural Coach and Mental Health First Aider, for an open, honest and educational conversation about menopause, perimenopause and workplace wellbeing.

Together, they explore the physical, psychological and emotional symptoms of menopause, including some of the lesser-known experiences such as brain fog, anxiety, disrupted sleep, joint pain, exhaustion and loss of confidence.

They also discuss the very real impact these symptoms can have on women's working lives, from struggling with concentration and decision-making to questioning professional abilities, missing opportunities for career progression or feeling unable to speak openly with employers.

But this conversation isn't just about understanding menopause. It's about what we can all do to make things better.

In this episode, we explore:

  • The differences between perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause.
  • Common misconceptions and myths surrounding menopause.
  • The physical, mental and emotional symptoms that aren't always recognised.
  • Brain fog, anxiety, disrupted sleep and the impact on everyday working life.
  • Why menopause can affect confidence, performance and career progression.
  • The reasons women may feel uncomfortable discussing their symptoms at work.
  • How managers and employers can recognise when somebody might need additional support.
  • The importance of empathy, communication and creating a supportive workplace culture.
  • Practical workplace adjustments, including flexible working, additional breaks and temperature control.
  • Why menopause awareness and education should involve everyone, not just women experiencing it.
  • Where to seek information, guidance and appropriate support.

One of the most important messages from this conversation is that menopause should never be something women feel they have to struggle through in silence.

Creating a menopause-aware workplace isn't simply about introducing policies. It's about recognising that behind every employee is a person, understanding that not every challenge is visible and creating an environment where people feel comfortable asking for help.

Whether you're experiencing menopause yourself, supporting someone who is, managing a team or simply looking to improve your understanding, this episode offers valuable insights and practical advice.

As Shelley reminds us:

"You don't get a prize for suffering."

Because better awareness leads to better conversations, and better conversations lead to more supportive workplaces.
