EP 75: Are You Compromising Your Faith Without Realizing It? | Church of Pergamum
Description
Can you love Jesus, stand firm in your faith, and STILL be compromising in areas of your life?
Welcome back to Seasoned Sistas! We're continuing our Bible study series on the Seven Churches of Asia in the Book of Revelation, and in Episode 3, we're studying the Church of Pergamum in Revelation 2:12–17.
Pergamum was surrounded by idolatry, emperor worship, and cultural pressures that challenged the Christian faith. Yet Jesus commended the believers for holding firmly to His name, even in the face of persecution.
But there was a problem.
Some within the church were holding to the teachings of Balaam and the Nicolaitans, which Jesus confronted because of their connection to idolatry, sexual immorality, and spiritual compromise.
And here's where this gets personal.
What happens when the things God has called us to reject slowly become things we've learned to tolerate?
In this Bible study, we're breaking down the historical and cultural context of ancient Pergamum, examining Jesus' warning to the church, and exploring what spiritual compromise looks like for Christians today.
In this episode, we're discussing:
- Why Jesus referred to Pergamum as the place where Satan's throne was
- The influence of pagan worship, Roman culture, and emperor worship
- Why Jesus commended the church for remaining faithful under persecution
- Who Balaam was and what his story teaches us about compromise
- The teachings of the Nicolaitans and the danger of false doctrine
- How compromise can develop gradually through justification and desensitization
- The difference between living in the world and adopting its values
- Why Jesus called the church to repentance
- The meaning of the hidden manna, white stone, and new name promised to those who overcome
Sometimes compromise doesn't begin with someone deciding to walk away from God. Sometimes it begins with small exceptions, repeated justifications, and becoming comfortable with things that once convicted us.
The Church of Pergamum reminds us that standing firm in one area of our faith doesn't give us permission to compromise in another.
So grab your Bible and join me as we study Revelation 2:12–17 together!
