Field Note #064| Epistemic Laziness

Season 1 Episode 1 Published 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Description

Why is it becoming harder to get a straight answer in a review meeting even as the documents on the table get cleaner, longer, and better organised?

In this Field Notes, we examine Epistemic Laziness: the substitution of automated fluency for personal understanding. Historically, the struggle to write a coherent proposal forced practitioners to discover the flaws in their own assumptions. When software removes that struggle, it delivers the finished posture of expertise without the cognitive calibration that makes expertise safe.

We explore why the human brain equates readability with validity, how to distinguish passive recognition from active engineering and executive judgement, and what happens when a polished recommendation meets an unrecorded constraint on the shop floor.

The system provided the answer. The human skipped the thinking.

Consider one question as you listen: If the document were removed from the room right now, could you reconstruct the causal reasoning behind your decision—or only the fluency of the summary?
