The Lizzie Borden rhyme is catchy, but it’s also a trap. Two people are murdered inside a modest house on 2nd Street in Fall River on a bright summer morning in 1892, and the person standing at the center of the storm walks away legally cleared. That gap between what we “think” we know and what can actually be proven is where this story gets truly unsettling.

We break down the Borden family dynamic, starting with Andrew Borden’s wealth and extreme frugality, the simmering tension over money and property, and the complicated place Abby holds as a stepmother. From there, we follow the timeline: Abby attacked upstairs, Andrew later killed on the downstairs sofa, and a neighborhood full of people who somehow don’t see anyone flee. Then come the details that made headlines and still fuel debates today: Lizzie’s inconsistent-sounding answers, the burned dress she says was stained with paint, the report that she tried to obtain prussic acid, and the discovery of hatchets in the basement without the kind of forensic science we rely on now.

And because Dark Crossroads lives at the crossroads of true crime and paranormal, we also go into what happens after the trial. The Borden House becomes one of America’s most talked-about haunted locations, with visitors reporting footsteps, voices, cold spots, shifting objects, and apparitions, plus eerie claims tied to Maplecroft. By the end, we’re left with the only honest conclusion: the mystery survives because certainty never arrived.
