WPP#31: Is It the Screen, or What It's Replacing?
Published 9 hours ago
Description
Is it the screen itself, or what the screen is replacing? A new review of studies covering millions of children linked more screen use with lower language skills, more anxiety-like and behavioral difficulties, and more peer-related challenges. The findings are observational: an association, not proof of cause. In this episode, Dr. Vic looks at screen time through a nervous system lens.
You'll hear:
- Why this research can't say screens cause these outcomes, and why displacement may be the bigger question
- What a regulated versus dysregulated nervous system can look like in a child, especially after screen time
- Why not all screen time is the same: FaceTime with grandparents and co-viewing versus rapid-fire short videos
- Movement-first ideas: swinging, crawling, jumping, cross-crawl patterns, and time outdoors
- Two simple screen-free windows: meals and bedtime
- Signs it may be worth taking a closer look at how your child's nervous system is adapting
If you use screens, there's no guilt here. The goal isn't a screen-free child. It's a nervous system that can function well without constantly needing the stimulation.
