Episode Details

Welcome into another historic edition of Locked On Cougars, hosted by Jake Hatch! Under the roaring lights at a packed LaVell Edwards Stadium, the No. 8 BYU Cougars pulled off one of the greatest, most defining victories in program history, knocking off the No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish in a thrilling 28-24 instant classic to improve to 6-0 on the season.

On today’s episode, we break down every unforgettable moment from a night where BYU proved it truly belongs on the grandest stage of college football. We start with quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who put on an absolute masterclass in poise and playmaking. Bachmeier accounted for three touchdowns—two on the ground, plus catching a 15-yard trick-play touchdown pass from Kyler Kasper—before driving the Cougars 55 yards to deliver the game-winning 6-yard touchdown pass to Walker Lyons with just 1:47 remaining.

We also break down the heart-pounding final sequence as Kelly Poppinga’s defense stood tall with its back against its own goal line. With Notre Dame driving inside the 5-yard line on the final play, the Cougars dialed up all-out pressure, forcing an incomplete pass from C.J. Carr to seal the massive upset.

Finally, we address the million-dollar question: Is this the definitive win that permanently elevates Kalani Sitake’s program into the elite upper echelon of college football? We examine BYU's College Football Playoff resume, look at what this statement win means for national perception, and evaluate the Cougars' ceiling moving forward as an undefeated, top-tier power.
