My FX Buddies Blog The U.S. State Department says the Iraqi market offers promising trade and investment opportunities for American companies and exporters. According to the statement reported by Iraq Observer, Washington sees opportunities particularly in government contracts and the energy sector, while also emphasizing that Iraq needs to improve its business environment, address regulatory challenges and continue reforms supporting its path toward World Trade Organization membership. This isn't simply an Iraqi government announcement saying, “Come invest in Iraq.” The United States is telling American businesses that Iraq represents a potentially promising market. At the same time, the U.S. is pointing to regulatory and business-environment reforms as important conditions for deeper economic integration. Previous U.S. investment-climate reporting has also highlighted regulatory and bureaucratic obstacles facing foreign investors in Iraq.
