Seized during the Civil War as a Union prison where Confederate captives were reportedly killed and dumped down a well, the property later served as a deadly epidemic pesthouse and a 1916 bootlegger’s brothel where a police sergeant was gunned down. Decades of violence spawned tales of rattling chains, phantom moans, and a headless woman gliding across the dark crest.
