On a wet January night in 2015, Holmes is on the porch of a converted craftsman above Echo Park, stripping a dying porch light, while Watson tallies his Silver Lake clinic's books. A knock at the door brings Ruth Calloway, an FBI agent. Two sheriff's deputies came to her home in Pasco Heights and warned her that she would be arrested if she kept looking for a man the county insists was never booked. That man is Tobias Ward, her informant inside the county jail. He documented intake photographs, medical notes and a use-of-force report signed twice, and then dropped off the county's books. His last call to her was a single low-voiced remark that he had counted wrong. Watson fears making an enemy of the largest sheriff's office in the country. Holmes points out that nobody posts guards around a man who doesn't exist. At the FBI field office in Westwood, Calloway explains that Ward carried a recorder the size of a car key and mailed out about two hundred hours of tape, one folder a week, until a jail shakedown exposed him. His property is logged, but there is no receiving signature and no destination. Who moved him, and on whose order?
From the series Holmes LA: a real Los Angeles crime reimagined as a modern Sherlock Holmes radio mystery, performed by a full multi-voice AI cast with an original score and sound design.
Loosely inspired by a real Los Angeles case of the 2010s. All names, characters, dialogue and events are fictional; the words, actions, motives and private lives of every character — including a jail booking clerk, sheriff's captains and deputies, a federal agent, a police lieutenant, the investigators and the police — are invented for drama, and so is the solution of the mystery. Where a real city, state, public body or newspaper is mentioned, its part in this story is invented; the county jail, the sheriff's department and the federal field office named in it are invented too. This is a work of fiction, not a factual account of any real person or institution. No real person is portrayed, and no real individual, company or organisation is accused of any act shown here.
