London, June 1985. Holmes has filled Baker Street with the reek of coal-tar, and Watson is sulking beside an open window, when a drenched visitor appears on the step. He is the chief cashier of a collapsed foreign bank, now auditing its ruins for the liquidators. The bank's chairman has been found hanged beneath Tolland Bridge, and a signed confession was left at his lodging. The liquidators want the file closed within the week. The cashier brings transfer books and a sealed envelope, and one objection: the confession stops a hundred million dollars short of the loss. Holmes insists on reading the books before the letter. Days later he and Watson go to the bank's London agency, where the audit is being packed into boxes and the chairman's courier fetches slips and keys for them. Then Inspector Lestrade takes them to the scaffolding beneath the bridge, where the watchman heard a ladder creak at midnight and nothing after. The Yard calls it suicide and considers the matter settled. Holmes does not. If the dead man confessed so carefully, why does his arithmetic fail where the ledgers do not?
From the series Sherlock Holmes โ The New Cases: a real crime of the 1980s reimagined as a classic Sherlock Holmes radio mystery, performed by a full multi-voice AI cast, with sound design and a light score that stays under the story.
Loosely inspired by a real event of the 1980s. All names, characters, dialogue and events are fictional; the words, actions, motives and private lives of every character โ including bankers, clerks, couriers, a lodging-house keeper, liquidators, the investigators and the police โ are invented for drama, and so is the solution of the mystery. Where a real city, state, public body or newspaper is mentioned, its part in this story is invented; the bank, its London agency and the lodging house named in it are invented too. This is a work of fiction, not a factual account of any real person or institution. No real person is portrayed, and no real individual, company or organisation is accused of any act shown here.
