Legally Kidnapped: Dr. Jonathan Farley on Guardianship Abuse and the Fight to Save His Mother

Episode 26 Published 3 weeks ago
Description

In a very personal episode of The Academic Boardroom, hosts Dr. Eli Joseph and Dr. Janice Gassam Asare speak with Dr. Jonathan Farley, who is a trained mathematician from Harvard and Oxford, a longtime professor, and a former member of the Vanderbilt faculty who left Tennessee after receiving threats over his views on Confederate memorials. However, in this episode, the topic of discussion is not about Confederate memorials.

Instead, it is focused on the legal battle over Dr. Farley's mother, Dr. Vinetta Farley, who served as the chair of the Department of African and Afro-American Studies at Brockport. Dr. Farley narrates how his mother had been prevented from entering her own house by the police with the assurance provided by his brother even though there was no court order against her or any medical evaluation conducted. He shares how he was cut off from communicating with her for a long time without any proper notice and how his mother was taken to an unknown care home where she was treated with drugs even though there was no history of mental illness in her family and how the case went against Dr. Farley's mother.

Dr. Farley goes further to discuss how police officers refused to investigate the case, adult protective services did not perform their duty as per their role, and how the legal advocacy organizations did not take any action to protect his mother.
