Hours after Saturday's race at Gum Flats, the chief steward of the Moreton Turf Club flies halfway round the world to Baker Street, insisting the result cannot be allowed to stand. What happened in that race that a steward would cross the world rather than trust his own stewards' room?

On a sweltering Sunday near midnight in November 1986, Holmes and Watson are interrupted at Baker Street by Kincaid, chief steward of the Moreton Turf Club, who has flown straight from Brisbane with a brown-paper bundle he will not set down. A race was run at Gum Flats on Saturday afternoon, and he cannot let its result stand. Holmes at first declines, but Kincaid's odd manner and his refusal even to sit win the detectives over, and they follow him to Queensland. At the weighing room, Inspector Rutherford of the Queensland Police is under pressure: bookmakers face a payout of three million dollars, and the Minister wants someone charged by Monday. In the suburb of Hendra, the suspended trainer Loretta has lost her licence and her credit, her neighbour Varley is cataloguing her horses for a sale on Thursday, and her strapper Trish, unpaid for weeks, is barely civil to anyone. One stable box stands swept bare. Everyone at Hendra has a grievance, a debt or a reason to keep quiet, and Holmes has only a stable yard to go on. Who in this tidy, ruined yard is keeping a secret, and what does Kincaid fear he will find among his own officials?

From the series Sherlock Holmes — The New Cases: a real crime of the 1980s reimagined as a classic Sherlock Holmes radio mystery, performed by a full multi-voice AI cast, with sound design and a light score that stays under the story.

Loosely inspired by a real event of the 1980s. All names, characters, dialogue and events are fictional; the words, actions, motives and private lives of every character — including the racing stewards and officials, the trainers and stable hands, the bookmakers, the investigators and the police — are invented for drama, and so is the solution of the mystery. Where a real city, state, public body or newspaper is mentioned, its part in this story is invented; the racecourse, the turf club and the stables named in it are invented too. This is a work of fiction, not a factual account of any real person or institution. No real person is portrayed, and no real individual, company or organisation is accused of any act shown here.

Setting: London and Brisbane — November 1986.

Directed Edition: the same story, newly performed line by line with a directing pass for every voice: each actor's delivery is chosen for the moment, from a dry aside to a held breath.

Writer v2.7 — the studio's newest writing process: the plot is planned and checked by an AI story editor, then each act is drafted with the whole story in view and edited before a word is voiced.
