How Sedalia’s Liberty Center Turned a Historic Building Into an Arts Destination

How Sedalia’s Liberty Center Turned a Historic Building Into an Arts Destination

Published 2 weeks ago
Description

If you walked into the Liberty Center in downtown Sedalia today, you might see a play on stage, artwork in the gallery, kids taking an art class, or a concert happening outside. But this building has had quite a life.

It opened as a theater in 1920, hosted a campaign stop for Franklin Roosevelt, eventually became a movie house, and then, believe it or not, spent years as a warehouse for cottage cheese and ice cream. Today, it's once again a gathering place for the arts, and Ruthie Hart is the Arts Director at the Liberty Center Association for the Arts.
