On Easter Eve, 1941, Holmes and Watson are passing a quiet evening at Baker Street, wagering a shilling on the weather, when a visitor slips up through Mrs Hudson's kitchen. Naomi has walked from Stepney to report that her sister Esther went out after dark on Good Friday and has not come home. The police have taken the name, and Holmes is inclined to leave it with them until Watson points out how strange the hour is: shops shut, chapels empty, no buses worth the name. They take the case, and a week's searching comes to nothing. Fifteen months later, Holmes and Watson are called to the cellar of a bombed Methodist chapel in Kennington. There the local air-raid warden, Rudge, shows them a flagstone that demolition men lifted that morning, and the grave-shaped hollow beneath it holds a woman's body. Inspector Lestrade is ready to call it enemy action, but the warden insists he searched every stone in that cellar after the bomb fell and found nobody. At the Southwark mortuary, Naomi identifies a green coat whose hem she once mended by hand. It was the coat Esther wore when she went out to collect an old debt. Her pockets are empty. Who laid her beneath that stone, and why did the warden keep so careful a record of the cellar?

From the series Sherlock Holmes โ€” The New Cases: a real crime of the 1940s reimagined as a classic Sherlock Holmes radio mystery, performed by a full multi-voice AI cast, with sound design and a light score that stays under the story.

Loosely inspired by a real event of the 1940s. All names, characters, dialogue and events are fictional; the words, actions, motives and private lives of every character โ€” including the wardens, watchers and cleaners of a London lane, a family from Stepney, the investigators and the police โ€” are invented for drama, and so is the solution of the mystery. Where a real city, state, public body or newspaper is mentioned, its part in this story is invented; the chapel, the solicitors' office and the lane named in it are invented too. This is a work of fiction, not a factual account of any real person or institution. No real person is portrayed, and no real individual, company or organisation is accused of any act shown here.

Setting: Baker Street and Kennington โ€” March 1941.

Writer v2.7 โ€” the studio's newest writing process: the plot is planned and checked by an AI story editor, then each act is drafted with the whole story in view and edited before a word is voiced โ€” and then cast and performed with our new casting and voice direction.
