What kind of woman looks at a beach for sale in Indonesia and thinks, "Fuck it, let's buy it"?

My guest this week, Sophie Foote, apparently. And she was just 26 at the time 😂

Sophie is an entrepreneur, investor, business mentor and the woman behind Business by the Beach, The Beach Club and One to Many. She's built businesses from scratch, sold them, reinvented herself more than once and learned a hell of a lot about creating wealth, taking risks and building a life on her own terms.

From turning a remote Indonesian beach into a thriving dive resort to building a property management business generating £1.6 million in annual revenue, Sophie's story is anything but conventional.

But this conversation isn't just about the money or the impressive business achievements.

It's about what happens when the business you've worked so hard to build stops giving you the life you actually wanted.

Because how many of us leave employment dreaming of freedom, only to create another job for ourselves, complete with longer hours, more responsibility and nobody to tell us to switch off?

Sophie and I get into all of it.

We talk about the confidence that comes from doing difficult things, the power of community (including the wild and scary story of a fire threatening her resort), why selling is essential, how to build a business that has value beyond you, and why changing direction doesn't mean you've failed.

We also explore something close to my heart: who are you when you move on from the business, role or identity that once defined you?

And I absolutely love Sophie's approach to business. It's ambitious, commercially minded and unapologetically centred on enjoying your life.

In this episode, we explore:

  • Why Sophie bought a beach in Indonesia and what building a resort from nothing taught her.
  • How she scaled a property management business to £1.6 million in annual revenue before selling it.
  • Why confidence and resilience are built through action, not endless preparation.
  • The difference between creating a business and creating another exhausting job.
  • How to think about assets, recurring revenue and making your expertise work harder for you.
  • Why your business should have systems and value beyond your personal involvement.
  • The identity shifts that come with selling, pivoting and reinventing yourself.
  • Why being yourself can be far more powerful than trying to fit into someone else's version of success.
  • And why, if you're building a business, you cannot keep apologising for selling.

Whether you're just starting out, considering a change or wondering whether the business you've built still fits the person you're becoming, this conversation will give you plenty to think about.

Because the point isn't purely to build a successful business.

It's to build a business that supports a life you actually want to live.
