Folk Tales of India — Part 12 of 81 (The Origin of Rubies · The Match-making Jackal · The Ghost who was Afraid of being Bagged)
Description
Three shorter tales. The first tells how rubies came out of the sea, from a palace beneath a whirlpool where a lady lies in a trance deeper than sleep beside the god Siva. The second follows the cleverest match-maker in Bengal — a jackal, who chews betel-leaves like a lord and marries a poor weaver to a king's daughter. The third is the barber who frightened a ghost with nothing but a looking-glass, and got a granary of gold for his wit.
From Folk-Tales of Bengal by Lal Behari Day (1883), public domain; told in a modern in-house rendering.
