Gelion CEO: Top-five automaker backs NES cathode in first co-funded EV evaluation

Description

Gelion PLC (AIM:GELN, OTC:GELNF, FRA:X0S) CEO Matthew Wood spoke with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the company's new co-funded proof-of-concept agreement with a top-five global automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to evaluate its nano-encapsulated sulfur (NES) cathode active material for electric vehicle batteries.

Wood explained that the OEM will provide engineering expertise, advanced testing facilities and a contribution to programme funding, while Gelion supplies battery cells incorporating NES and conducts complementary testing to correlate performance data. He described it as the first co-funded evaluation of cells containing NES by a global automotive OEM, bringing modest additional commercial revenue in 2027 alongside revenue from the joint development agreement with Mitsubishi announced in August.

The deal builds on recent EV progress, including a separate agreement with a top-15 global OEM announced the previous week and a solid-state battery programme with Nissan in Europe announced in June. Wood highlighted growing breadth and depth of automotive interest, with more companies evaluating Gelion's cathode materials across different chemistries and applications, from luxury to mass-market EVs.

On the technology's appeal, Wood said NES offers high-capacity, high-power cathode material that is cheaper and lighter than incumbent materials, with potential to support lower-risk domestic supply chains. He also outlined Gelion's wider strategy across defence and aerospace, consumer electronics and EVs, referencing recent drone mission testing results from the ARMD programme with QinetiQ.
