Folk Tales of France — Part 2 (The Houle of La Corbière · The Grass Snake · The Girl and Her Seven Brothers)
Description
Three more tales from Paul Sébillot's Contes populaires de la Haute-Bretagne (Paris, 1880), the great collection of the folk tales of Upper Brittany, in a fresh English translation made for this series from the original French.
In Saint-Cast, Agnès Depais lives beside the Houle of the fairies, and the Kindly Hand beneath her hearthstone gives her a bottle that cures, an ointment that restores her stolen cow and sheep, and a loaf that never grows less. A grass snake comes out of the hedge to eat the mowers' crumbs, and the fairy Margot's second belt is tested on an oak tree. And a little girl carries fire in her apron, fells the great oaks with a six-liard knife, and goes into the forest of Ardennes to find her seven brothers.
Told in Saint-Cast, Collinée and Trélivan, and collected by Paul Sébillot (1843–1918).
