Popular Tales from the Norse — Part 8 of 14 (The Best Wish)
Description
Three brothers hold one wish each. The two elder wish for pockets that are never empty of money; Boots, the youngest, wishes that every woman who sees him might fall in love with him — and for his pains is sent to the road as his brothers' servant. Three innkeepers' wives in turn give the penniless lad a pair of scissors that cut silk and satin out of the empty air, a cloth that spreads itself with feasts, and a tap that pours the finest drink that ever was tasted; on Beggars' Isle he clothes and feasts the outcasts finer than the king himself. The Princess bargains for each treasure in turn — a night on her chamber floor, a night on the bench by her bed, a night on the bed outside the quilt, always under the eyes of her watchmen — till she goes to the king and asks for the lad himself. A tale from Dasent's collection.
From Popular Tales from the Norse (first edition, 1859), translated by George Webbe Dasent from the tales collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe — a fresh in-house modernised rendering.
