Code Wack - Cancer, Copays and the Cost of Staying Alive
Published 1 week, 2 days ago
Description
This time on CodeWACK!
Cancer is increasingly treatable, with the five-year survival rate for all cancers combined reaching 70%, according to the American Cancer Society. But surviving cancer can come at an enormous financial cost. Even people with good jobs and health insurance aren't immune from staggering copayments and medical debt.
This week, we're speaking with Garrina Ross, an automotive worker and Founder and Executive Director of MyBreastFriend. Diagnosed with inflammatory breast cancer at just 36 years old, Garrina underwent months of treatment while raising her teenage daughter. Eight years later, she's facing cancer again, and she's still dealing with medical debt.
Now a patient advocate, Garrina shares how her experiences have shaped her work and why she believes no one should have to choose between life and debt.
