Manas — The Earliest Recordings — Part 18 of 31 (Semetey — Part Two)

Season 11 Episode 18 Published 17 hours ago
Description

Semetey dreams — the poplar trembling at its root, the sea surging at its ground — and Ai Chorok reads the dream and bars his way with her own body, and is struck down for the warning. He rides on. At his father's grave he makes the offering, and the kettle answers in black-red blood: Manas is wholly dead. Then the six hosts come over the ridge, a hero high as a mountain on the brown horse. Both his horses fail him, and still no man dares seize him where he lies. And Kan Choro, whose mind has caught fire three times at slights remembered, steps over to the enemy and sells him — for a wife promised and a princedom on the Oudur-Su. One club blow, and the Only One is thrown to the ground; and on the betrayer's own order his bones are burned and his ashes scattered wide. From the earliest written Manas, recorded from Kyrgyz singers in 1862–1869 and published by Wilhelm Radlov in 1885 (Proben der Volkslitteratur, Part V), in a fresh English translation made for KacheliTV. This is the Manas of the first singers ever written down, not the later giant tellings.
