Myths of the Cherokee — Part 15 of 22 (Ga'na's Adventures among the Cherokee · Cowee Town)
Description
The peace embassy part. The two Seneca sisters escape by night with the baby and are guided home by voices — the origin of the Yontoñwisas dance, from Curtin's Seneca manuscript. Ga'na's embassy follows: the purification, the eagle-feather quest, the wampum belt 'as long as a man,' the buried weapons, the adoptions, the ball games and the races against the Seoqgwageono — told here without its final war episode, which is severed and recorded in the script notes. Then Cowee town and its Shawano prisoner's blessing, and Mooney's survey of the eastern tribes, compressed to its names, territories, and the Catawba boundary treaty of the stone piles. Mooney's war narratives of this stretch (Nos. 92–96, 99–101) are excluded under the shelf's no-violence rule and documented in the exclusion register. Source: James Mooney, Myths of the Cherokee (1900), public domain; fresh in-house renderings faithful to Mooney's record, told in Mooney's order.
