118 | Feeling Guilty for Wanting More in Midlife? How a Growth Mindset Helps You Choose From Your Values

Episode 118 Published 4 days, 7 hours ago
Description

“Don’t you miss your kids?” “Who’s watching your kids while you work?”

If you’ve heard those questions, you know how fast guilt can follow, and you’ve probably noticed that nobody asks the dads.

In this episode, I talk about mom guilt in midlife. How it quietly takes our time, our energy, and eventually our sense of who we are. And how one shift, from habit-based decisions to values-based choices, helps you get your peace and your identity back.

Why do working moms feel more guilt than working dads?
Research shows full-time working moms report more guilt than full-time working dads about how work affects their kids. The guilt is strongest when a woman feels she’s falling short of an “ideal mom.” It isn’t about how much she loves her family. It’s about the expectations she’s carrying.

How does mom guilt cause women to lose their identity in midlife?
When guilt shows up, the first thing most moms cut is time for themselves. One guilty “yes” at a time, she disappears from her own life. By her 40s or 50s, she may not recognize the woman in the mirror.

What is the difference between a habit-based decision and a values-based choice?
A habit-based decision runs on autopilot, driven by fear, expectation, and “what will people think?” A values-based choice starts with a pause and one question: What matters most to me, and what is God asking of me? Knowing your values makes decisions clearer and guilt quieter.

How do you respond when someone asks, “Don’t you miss your kids?”
Answer from your values, not your guilt. You don’t owe anyone a defense. A settled answer might be: “Every day. And I want them to see a mom who uses what God gave her.”

What does the Bible say about guilt and people-pleasing?
Galatians 1:10 reminds us that we serve God, not human approval. Much of what we call mom guilt is people-pleasing dressed up as love.
