A six-day experiment improved long-term conversational memory from an initial F1 score of 0.392 to 0.666 across 41 experiments, using Claude to write code and run evaluations. The biggest gains came from removing tooling friction, correcting misleading metrics, eliminating unnecessary fact extraction, and improving retrieval paths. Postgres made these changes inexpensive to test. The central lesson: AI agents can accelerate experimentation, but human judgment is essential for validating objectives, interpreting results, and preventing optimization against misleading metrics.
