Tuvalu calls for greater climate change ambition

Tuvalu calls for greater climate change ambition

Published 1 day, 9 hours ago
Description
Tuvalu hits back at claims that a pre-COP event was a flop, emphasising a phase-out of fossil fuels must be discussed around COP31.

Tuvalu, whose population numbers around 10,000, hosted a leader's gathering at last week's Pre-COP event shared with Fiji, part of a compromise struck by Australia to divide hosting rights with Türkiye. The event came under heavy Australian media scrutiny, with shadow energy minister Dan Tehan labelling the event an "embarrassment" and a "flop" over the low number of leaders attending beyond a group from the Pacific. Climate Change Minister Maina Vakafua Talia spoke with SBS's Naveen Razik about that event and what the world needs to focus on as the threat of climate change rises.

In this episode:
  • Tuvalu says a poorly attended climate summit still made an impact.
  • A landmark Australian ruling is being hailed internationally.
  • The need to be ambitious in climate talks globally.
  • Climate financing options for countries at risk.
  • The risk of brain drain from countries at the frontline of climate change.
