Fairy Tales of Japan — Part 4 of 24 (The “Shinansha,” or the South Pointing Carriage · The Adventures of Kintaro, the Golden Boy)
Description
Two tales from old Japan. First, the shinansha: a wonderful carriage whose little figure always points to the south, invented by a mythical emperor to defeat a magician's fog — and, in the same bright reign, the first boat, dreamed up from watching a spider ride a floating leaf. Then the Golden Boy of the Ashigara mountains: Kintaro, strong enough to pull up a great pine by its roots, who wrestles with the bear, the deer, the monkey and the hare, and is discovered by a general sent through all Japan in search of boys of promise.
