Description
The classic Punjabi romance of Heer Siyal of Jhang and Dheedo Ranjha of Takht Hazara, from Heer (1766), the beloved verse epic of Waris Shah — the tale of a flute-playing cowherd, a proud and fearless heroine, and a love that defied two villages. Retold in fresh English.
This episode: the scandal breaks over the village; Ranjha is sent away and the buffaloes will not graze without him; the kazi admonishes Heer, and she answers him with the poem's great defence of love; the Five Pirs plead the lovers' cause; and Heer answers Kaidu's slanders in the open bazaar.
Texts: Waris Shah, Heer (1766), public domain. This retelling is a fresh in-house English rendering; the meaning crib of record is Charles Frederick Usborne's public-domain English prose translation (1901).
