Welcome back to Sergio Says It Straight, where we believe in straight talk, real people, and no filter. In this special episode, Sergio reconnects with Eileen Taipe, a former Marine Corps mentor who played an important role in his life and career.
Eileen takes us back to her childhood growing up in Queens, New York, in a hardworking Peruvian-American family. She shares the experiences that shaped her character, the influence of her mother, and what led her to join the United States Marine Corps. From serving overseas as a Marine Security Guard in Cairo, Egypt, and Brussels, Belgium, to leading and mentoring young Marines, Eileen reflects on the experiences and relationships that helped shape the person she is today.
Sergio and Eileen revisit their Marine Corps days, remembering the camaraderie, the friendships, the challenges, and the lessons that come with military service. Eileen explains why she always pushed the Marines under her leadership to think about their futures, set goals, and take advantage of opportunities that could help them succeed long after leaving the service.
But her journey didn't end with retirement. Eileen opens up about transitioning into civilian life, exploring new career opportunities, and making one of the most important decisions of her life: prioritizing time with her son over a demanding career that kept her away from home. Her experiences working with at-risk youth eventually helped her discover a new calling in education.
Now working as a middle school teacher in Wisconsin, Eileen shares the challenges and rewards of working with today's students, the importance of building relationships, and why she believes every young person deserves opportunities to learn and grow. She also discusses returning to school, earning advanced degrees, and proving that it is never too late to start a new chapter.
The conversation gets personal as Eileen reflects on family, faith, aging, and becoming a grandmother. She talks about the lessons life continues to teach her, the importance of staying connected to her roots, and the gratitude she feels for the life she has built.
This episode is a reminder that retirement doesn't mean your purpose is over, your career doesn't have to define you, and sometimes the most rewarding opportunities come when life takes you in a direction you never expected.
Join Sergio and Eileen for an honest, heartfelt conversation about military service, mentorship, motherhood, second chances, and finding purpose at every stage of life.
