Season 16
Episode 3
Published 3 days, 17 hours ago
Description
Urashima Taro, the most skilful fisherman on the coast of Tango, saves a tortoise from the boys who are tormenting it — and the tortoise returns to carry him on its back beneath the sea, to the palace of the Sea King, where the Princess Otohime herself comes out to welcome him. Days of wonder under the waves, a longing for the home he left behind, and a beautiful lacquered box — the tamate-bako — that he must promise never, ever to open.
From Japanese Fairy Tales by Yei Theodora Ozaki (1908), public domain; told in a fresh in-house rendering.
KacheliTV — world classics, read aloud.
