Description
After ten devastating plagues, Israel finally leaves Egypt. The Egyptians urgently send God's people away, the wealth of Egypt passes into Israel's hands, and a mixed multitude joins them on the journey. Yet the Exodus is more than the liberation of one nation from slavery. As God establishes the Passover for generations to come, He reveals something remarkable about who can belong to His covenant people. Those who were once foreigners can now become part of Israel, not because of their ancestry, but through their allegiance to Yahweh.
In this episode, we examine the departure from Egypt, the significance of the mixed multitude, and why God declares that there shall be one law for the native Israelite and the foreigner who joins them. We explore how covenant identity, circumcision, and worship challenge the idea that belonging to God's people is simply a matter of bloodline. We also consider how the wealth carried out of Egypt will eventually become part of the Tabernacle and why the Passover's command to remember becomes central to understanding the larger biblical story.
We then follow the Passover into the New Testament, examining the four cups of the traditional Seder and their connection to God's promises in Exodus 6. Why does Jesus interrupt the Passover meal and declare that He will not drink again until the Kingdom of God comes? We explore the possibility that Jesus leaves the cup of redemption behind to take upon Himself another cup entirely—the cup of God's wrath. From His prayer in Gethsemane to the sour wine lifted to Him on a branch of hyssop, we trace the connections between Psalm 75, the blood on Egypt's doorposts, the crucifixion, and the promise of Revelation 21 that God will dwell with His people.
