Description
The so-called “Kansas City 3” were Ricky Johnson, Clayton McGeeney and David Harrington, three friends who gathered at Jordan Willis’ Kansas City home on January 7, 2024, to watch the Chiefs’ final regular-season game. Two days later, McGeeney’s fiancée went looking for him after the men failed to come home and Willis reportedly did not respond to calls or messages. Harrington was found on the back porch, while Johnson and McGeeney were discovered in the snow-covered backyard. The bizarre scene immediately generated speculation that the men had frozen to death or that foul play was involved, but the medical examiner later determined all three died from combined fentanyl and cocaine toxicity. Investigators said the group had used alcohol, marijuana and cocaine at the gathering, and searches of Willis’ home turned up drugs containing both cocaine and fentanyl.

The case remained unresolved publicly for more than a year before prosecutors charged Willis and alleged drug supplier Ivory Carson in March 2025 with three counts of involuntary manslaughter and two counts of delivering a controlled substance. Court records said DNA linked Willis and Carson to bags containing cocaine and fentanyl, and Carson allegedly admitted selling cocaine to members of the group before the deaths; phone records also identified him as a regular supplier. Both men pleaded not guilty. The families, who had spent months demanding answers and questioning how three men could die outside Willis’ home without him knowing, later filed wrongful-death lawsuits alleging the defendants failed to warn the victims about the drugs or render aid when they were in distress. Prosecutors subsequently explored upgrading the criminal case to murder charges, turning what initially looked like a mysterious freezing death into a fentanyl-laced drug case with potentially far more serious criminal consequences.
