There Is No Alternative But Inflation — Neal McSpadden on the Cantillon Effect, Inflation Taxes, and Hard Money
Description
You can't save your way out of inflation, and the tax code makes you pay on it anyway. In this guest episode, Joe Withrow talks with Neal McSpadden of Tax Sherpa about the ideas in Neal's article, "There Is No Alternative But Inflation."
Neal argues that savings and investing are two different things, and that in a system where the money supply grows every year, cash can't keep up. He explains the Cantillon effect, how new money benefits whoever receives it first, and why the COVID stimulus checks showed it in real time. He then walks through a client who sold a California home, paid about $80,000 in tax, and by the Bureau of Labor Statistics inflation calculator made essentially no gain in real terms. That leads to a discussion of why taxing inflation-driven gains is so unfair, and the Senate proposal to index capital gains to inflation.
From there, Neal lays out his three tests for assets that hold up when money loses value: financialization, inflation-sensitive yield, and a supply-and-demand imbalance. He applies them to real estate, stocks, silver, junk silver, and Chinese numismatic coins, and explains his "whale rule": concentration builds wealth, diversification protects it. The episode closes with why government spending keeps rising despite DOGE, what that means for inflation, and why treating your personal finances like an investment matters.
