Two seconds left in a regional final against Naperville and Batavia is down one. Dan Issel catches a one-handed inbound on the low post and lays it in at the buzzer. He still calls it his favorite game from high school.
In the first of three episodes Dan and coauthor Doug Brunk talk about how his memoir Dan Issel: From Kentucky Wildcat to NBA Legend came together and then we go back to Batavia, Illinois. A school of fewer than six hundred kids playing in one state bracket with everybody else. A gym for two thousand that was full every night. A coaching hire that sounds like it came out of Hoosiers and a coach who stayed after practice with a five-foot-four seventh grader nobody else noticed.
Part 2 picks up at Kentucky.
