A question about taxes might sound boring, until you realize it is designed to destroy Jesus in public. While He teaches in the temple during Passover week, the Pharisees partner with the Herodians, an unlikely political alliance built on one shared goal: trapping Him in His words. They ask, “Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar or not?” If He says yes, He risks being labeled a traitor to Israel. If He says no, Rome has grounds to prosecute. We walk through why the question is so clever and why Jesus refuses to play their game.

What Jesus does instead is even more arresting. He exposes their hypocrisy, asks for a denarius, and delivers the line that still shapes Christian thinking about faith and government: “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.” We dig into what that means for everyday discipleship, why the real issue is not a tax problem but a heart problem, and how God’s image on our lives demands more than outward compliance.

Then the Sadducees step in with a second test, mocking the resurrection with an absurd story about seven brothers and one widow. Jesus answers with a sharp correction: they do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. We unpack His teaching on the resurrection, what He says about marriage in heaven, and how He proves life beyond the grave from the very books His opponents claim to honor, pointing to God’s words at the burning bush as evidence that He is the God of the living.

If you want a clear, Scripture-first way to handle trick questions, hot politics, and doubts about eternity, listen through to the closing challenge. Subscribe, share this with a friend, and leave a review with your biggest takeaway: what do you think it means to give God what is God’s?

We're taking the truth of God's Word to the nations - and you can help make it possible.
