Vladimir Mayakovsky — Fifteen Poems (1918–1920)
Description
An ode raised to the revolution — solemn "O" and all — and an order shouted to the army of arts: pianos into the street, drums out of the windows, the streets themselves for brushes and the squares for palettes. A worker poet who polishes brains with the rasp of language; sailors marching left, left, left under papered skies; Smolny itself striding three storeys tall across Europe; and then, in a dacha garden at Pushkino, the sun comes down to tea — sits at the poet's table, drinks his jam, and makes a pact: shine always, shine everywhere. Fifteen poems of the revolution's first years, ending with a moon widowed in the night and a cigarette case gleaming in the grass, worth more than seas and mountains.
Ode to the Revolution (Ода революции), Order to the Army of Arts (Приказ по армии искусства), Too Early to Rejoice (Радоваться рано), The Worker Poet (Поэт рабочий), To That Side (Той стороне), Left March (Левый марш), Staggering Facts (Потрясающие факты), With Comradely Greetings, Mayakovsky (С товарищеским приветом, Маяковский), We Are Marching (Мы идем), Vladimir Ilyich! (Владимир Ильич!), An Extraordinary Adventure Which Befell Vladimir Mayakovsky at the Dacha in Summer (Необычайное приключение, бывшее с Владимиром Маяковским летом на даче), Attitude to a Young Lady (Отношение к барышне), In the Manner of Heine (Гейнеобразное), Grief (Горе), and "The Cigarette Case Sank a Third into the Grass…" («Портсигар в траву ушел на треть…») — fifteen poems by Vladimir Mayakovsky, in new English verse translations made for this show, read aloud over a gentle instrumental bed.
