EP 74: You're Suffering, But God Hasn't Forgotten You | Church of Smyrna

Published 3 weeks ago
Description

Can you be faithful to God and still experience suffering, hardship, and opposition?

Welcome back to Seasoned Sistas! We're continuing our Bible study series on the Seven Churches of Asia in the Book of Revelation, and in Episode 2, we're diving into the Church of Smyrna (Revelation 2:8–11).

Unlike many of the other churches addressed in Revelation, Smyrna received no correction from Jesus. This church was experiencing persecution, poverty, and intense pressure because of their faith, yet Jesus described them as spiritually rich.

And that raises an important question: Have we started measuring God's faithfulness by how comfortable our lives are?

In this Bible study, we're exploring the historical and cultural background of ancient Smyrna, its loyalty to Rome, emperor worship, and why following Jesus could come at such a high cost.

We'll also break down Jesus' message to the church in Revelation 2:8–11 and discuss what it means for Christians today.

In this episode, we're talking about:

  • Why Smyrna faced persecution for following Jesus
  • The connection between Roman culture, emperor worship, and Christian persecution
  • Why Jesus called this impoverished church spiritually rich
  • What it means when God doesn't immediately remove our suffering
  • The difference between experiencing hardship and being outside God's will
  • Why Jesus told the believers not to fear what they were about to suffer
  • What it means to remain faithful even unto death
  • The promise of the crown of life and victory over the second death

Sometimes we assume that if we're praying, obeying God, and living according to His Word, life should get easier. But Smyrna reminds us that faithfulness doesn't always produce comfort, and suffering isn't automatically evidence of God's absence.

Jesus knew exactly what this church was going through. He saw their suffering, understood their circumstances, and encouraged them to remain faithful.

So grab your Bible and join me as we study Revelation 2:8–11 together!
