Pushkin — Ruslan and Lyudmila, Canto Two
Description
Pushkin — Ruslan and Lyudmila, Canto Two
The rivals scatter. Rogday, riding out in gloomy foreboding, hunts down the fleeing Farlaf — and finds him upside down in a muddy ditch, sword raised over the wrong man; a grey old woman on the road then points one rival toward his doom and counsels the other to go quietly home to Kiev. Ruslan rides on through the night and is attacked by an unknown horseman — and there the poem leaves the knights, mid-duel, to turn to Lyudmila: waking in Chernomor's castle, dressed by three silent maidens, wandering his enchanted garden, refusing his feasts — and at night leaping from her bed to seize the dwarf wizard by the cap while his servants carry in his mighty beard. The canto ends where the duel ends: in the waters of the Dnieper.
