Description

Pushkin — The Tale of the Priest and of His Workman Balda

A thrifty priest hires Balda at the market for a wage no money can pay: three flicks on the forehead at the year's end, with boiled spelt for his keep. Balda eats for four and works for seven, and as the term draws near the priest — egged on by his wife's clever counsel — sends him on an impossible errand: to collect three years' unpaid rent from the devils of the sea. By the shore Balda twists his rope, races his "little brother" the hare against the young devil, waits for a cloud to throw a stick into, and carries the grey mare between his legs — then comes home with the full sack of rent, and claims his three flicks, one, two, three.
