When 20-year-old newlywed Elena Milagro Hoyos was diagnosed with tuberculosis in the spring of 1930, her family took her to the Marine Hospital in Key West, Florida, for treatment.

There, they met a German-born scientist named Carl Tanzler, who promised that he – and he alone – could save Elena from certain death. The Hoyos family’s despair quickly turned to hope, but little did they know the disturbing lengths Carl would go to preserve Elena’s life.
