Daenerys I — A Dance with Dragons

Now ruling Meereen, Daenerys faces growing unrest as the Sons of the Harpy murder Stalwart Shield, an Unsullied soldier, marking an escalation in the resistance against her rule. While Skahaz mo Kandaq advocates executing members of Meereen's noble families in retaliation, Daenerys refuses to punish people without evidence. Meanwhile, her dragons continue growing larger and more difficult to control, and she begins questioning whether she has neglected them while focusing on ruling the city.

During a day of court, Daenerys confronts the increasingly complicated consequences of abolishing slavery. She rejects an alliance with Astapor's new king, Cleon, refuses Hizdahr zo Loraq's request to reopen the fighting pits, and struggles to deliver justice to families harmed during Meereen's liberation. Her dragons have also begun attacking livestock, forcing her to compensate local shepherds for their losses. However, the chapter ends with a horrifying revelation when a shepherd presents the burned bones of a child, suggesting that Daenerys's dragons have become a danger not only to animals but to the very people she intends to protect.
