JWST's "Little Red Dots" Mystery, Our Place in Laniakea & Pikachu Goes to Space!
Description
On this week's Kalam Astro, host Alya Al-Nuaimi blends cosmic wonder with a touch of pop culture magic — because yes, Pikachu is going to space!
The European Space Agency (ESA) and Pokémon have teamed up, sending a Pikachu plush aboard to the International Space Station and adding a special Pikachu avatar to Pokémon GO. It's a fun reminder that space exploration belongs to everyone!
But the real mystery of this episode? The "Little Red Dots." NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has discovered strange, tiny, glowing red objects deep in the early universe — objects so bizarre they challenge our current understanding of cosmology. Scientists can't agree on what they are: unusually compact star-forming galaxies? Primordial black holes? Something entirely new?
We also zoom out — way, way out — to explore the Laniakea Supercluster. This is our cosmic home: a massive structure containing over 100,000 galaxies, including our own Milky Way. And our Milky Way? Just a tiny speck inside it. Within Laniakea lies the Great Attractor, a mysterious gravitational anomaly pulling entire galaxies toward it.
And finally, we discuss K2-4787.02 — a candidate exoplanet discovered by NASA's Kepler telescope that looks remarkably similar to Earth. Could it be a twin of our planet?
Tune in, look up, and keep exploring with Kalam Astro! 🌌
