Eyes in Space: Roman Telescope, Orbital Junk & the Robot Swarms
Description
In this episode of Kalam Astro on Pulse 95 Radio, host Alya Al-Nuaimi takes you on an incredible journey through some of the most exciting and mind-bending stories in modern space science.
First up — meet the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, NASA's newest and most powerful eye in the sky. Named after the "Mother of Hubble," this extraordinary observatory packs a 300-megapixel camera capable of capturing 100 times more sky than the James Webb Space Telescope in a single shot. Set to begin science operations in early 2027, the Roman Telescope promises to reshape our understanding of the cosmos.
Then we tackle one of the most urgent problems facing modern space exploration: space debris. With over 170 million pieces of junk hurtling around Earth at bullet-like speeds, even a tiny paint fleck can destroy a spacecraft. Scientists are now exploring laser-based systems to nudge this debris out of orbit before we face what's known as the Kessler Syndrome — a catastrophic cascade of collisions that could effectively trap us on Earth.
We also explore the fascinating concept of swarm robotics — instead of one expensive rover on Mars, imagine hundreds of tiny coordinated robots working together like bees! And we dive into the future of clean energy from orbit: solar power stations placed at Lagrange Point 2 that could beam endless, clean electricity back to Earth.
Tune in, look up, and keep exploring with Kalam Astro! 🌌
