October 10, 2026 - 1 Samuel 7 & Proverbs 17:26-28

Published 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Description

Today’s reading covers 1 Samuel 7 and Proverbs 17:26–28. The reflection follows Israel’s genuine national repentance after roughly twenty years under Philistine domination, as Samuel calls the people to put away their foreign gods, and they gather at Mizpah to fast and confess. When the Philistines attack, the Lord throws them into confusion, and Israel drives them back, leading Samuel to set up the stone he names Ebenezer, marking that “till now the Lord has helped us.” The discussion frames this as a real, if familiar, turn in the cycle already seen throughout Judges, where genuine repentance meets God’s mercy and deliverance.

Proverbs 17:26–28 covers two main ideas. The first warns against punishing the righteous, which the discussion connects to Christ, the righteous one wrongly condemned, and our need for him to declare us righteous through faith. The second turns to restrained speech: a calm spirit shows real understanding, and even a fool who stays quiet can appear wise.
