Description
Host/Producer: Amy Browne Dawn Neptune stops by this morning to invite listeners to the first Indigenous Peoples’ Day Film Festival, Sunday, October 11th, 1:30-7:30pm, at the UU Church on Park Street in Bangor. All but one of the films that will be shown was produced by the Sunrise Media Collective Admission to the festival is free; donations will be accepted. Seven films will be shown, all but one produced by the Sunlight Media Collective, a locally-based group of film makers from Wabanakik. In addition to the films, traditional frybread will be served, along with a “Harvest Potluck Supper” preceding the last film, Homeland: Four Portraits of Native Action. A theme for the series of films is “Environmental Justice,” with Wabanaki communities attempting to maintain their traditional cultural practices such as treaty-reserved fishing, hunting and gathering, and Ceremonies in traditional places, despite environmental degradation of the land, air and especially the water. Current challenges include pollution of the Penobscot River from waste disposal and interruption of natural habitat from data centers. Filmmakers, activists, and scientists will be speaking and leading discussions after each film. The Sunlight Media Collective and the Peace & Justice Center of Eastern Maine are sponsors of the festival, with several other groups co-sponsoring.
