Back to Episodes“Selfish” And “Hostage”: Breaking Down The Memo Targeting Miami
Description
They called Miami part of a "Gang of Four." So I read the memo.
Saving College Sports, the group founded by Texas Tech regents chairman Cody Campbell, sent a memo on Oct. 8 to the 400+ schools backing the Protect College Sports Act. It says Miami, Florida State, Clemson and North Carolina are trying to "hold hostage" the bill "for their own selfish purposes," and tells those schools to call the four directly and "ask/demand that they pull back."
All this because the four schools asked Congress for two changes: a 22-team conference cap, and no three-year waiting period to switch conferences.
What the memo gets right: the House calendar is tight, and any change sends the bill back to the Senate.
Where it stretches: a private equity claim that isn't in any report on the schools' letter, a "fallback" breakaway league sourced to "indications are," and saying the Big Ten and SEC won't expand while warning about a 44-team super league.
Miami's name is on the record now. Is it being selfish, or just protecting its options? Tell me in the comments, and subscribe to Canes Pulse for research-first Miami Hurricanes coverage.
