10 Things You Own That Actually Own You | Jim Rohn Motivation
Description
There was a day you brought it home. The house, the car, the thing you had wanted for so long. And for a little while it served you, exactly as you imagined it would.
Uploaded 23-09-26
But somewhere along the way, the relationship reversed, and you didn't notice. The thing you bought to serve you started demanding to be served. The possession that was supposed to give you freedom started taking it away. And you kept calling it yours, kept saying you owned it, while it quietly ran your days.
Here is the truth: ownership is not a one-way street. When you acquire a thing, that thing acquires a piece of you in return. It takes your time. Your attention. Your money to maintain, your space to store, your worry to protect. And most people never sit down and count the cost of what their possessions are extracting from them.
This seminar walks through ten things you must understand about the possessions that own you — and how to hand that control back before they take any more of the one life you have.

WHO IS THE LANDLORD WHO FORGOT TO CHARGE
Most people believe that the more they gather, the freer they become. So they keep adding, certain that each new acquisition is one more piece of a good life. They never notice the moment the adding started subtracting. A thing that requires your constant care, your constant money, your constant attention is not adding freedom to your life. It is renting a room in it — and you never sent the bill.
THE ACCOUNTING ALMOST NOBODY RUNS
The purchase price is the smallest number in the whole transaction. The real figure is the maintenance, the storage, the insurance, the worry, the upgrade, the mental corner a thing occupies for years. A man pays a thousand and believes that was the cost. Over a decade the true price is ten times that in money, a hundred hours of his life, and a permanent claim on his focus. Run the accounting honestly on each thing you own, and some of what looked like wealth turns out to be a stack of obligations wearing the costume of success.
RELEASE RUNS THE MECHANISM BACKWARD
Here is the mercy in it: the same machinery reverses. The moment you let go of a possession that was owning you, the money and the time and the attention and the space come flooding back. You will not be free by tomorrow morning. But the person who has looked at every object and asked who owns whom lives a lighter, freer life — with room in it for what actually matters.
WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK
- Pick one possession and total its real cost: purchase, upkeep, worry, hours.
- Add up every recurring fee you pay and cancel each one not genuinely serving you.
- Open the storage unit, keep the handful that matters, release the rest.
- Leave the small device in another room while you sleep for three nights.
- Ask of each thing you own: is this serving me, or am I serving it?
