Mega Edition: The Investigation Into Bryan Kohberger During The First 2 Weeks In Jan 2023 (10/9/26)
Published 7 hours ago
Description
The first two weeks of January 2023 were dominated by Bryan Kohberger’s arrest, extradition and the first major public disclosure of the evidence investigators said tied him to the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. Kohberger had been arrested in Pennsylvania on December 30, and the early January coverage followed his waiver of extradition, transfer back to Idaho and first appearance in a Latah County courtroom, where he was ordered held without bail on four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary. The biggest development came on January 5, when authorities unsealed the probable cause affidavit. The filing revealed that investigators had recovered a knife sheath next to one of the victims with DNA that they said was linked to Kohberger through genetic material recovered from trash at his parents’ Pennsylvania home. It also detailed surveillance footage of a white Hyundai Elantra moving around Moscow and Pullman, cellphone records showing Kohberger’s phone had used towers covering the King Road area on at least 12 prior occasions, and a period on the night of the murders when the phone stopped reporting to the network.
The affidavit also transformed the public understanding of what happened inside 1122 King Road. A surviving roommate told investigators she heard noises during the early morning hours, opened her bedroom door several times and eventually saw a masked man dressed in black walking through the house before she locked herself in her room. Investigators narrowed the killings to roughly 4:00 to 4:25 a.m., while records showed Xana Kernodle received a DoorDash delivery around 4 a.m. and was using TikTok shortly afterward, suggesting she may have been awake during the attack. Headlines in the days that followed focused heavily on whether Kohberger had surveilled the house beforehand, whether he returned to the area later that morning, what motive he might have had and whether he knew any of the victims. Despite the flood of new information, the affidavit left major questions unanswered, including motive, the location of the murder weapon and the full scope of the prosecution’s evidence, while Kohberger’s defense began preparing for what was already becoming one of the most closely watched murder cases in the country.
