October 9, 2026 - 1 Samuel 6 & Proverbs 17:21-25

Published 2 weeks, 2 days ago
Description

Today’s reading covers 1 Samuel 6 and Proverbs 17:21–25. The reflection follows the Philistines’ decision to return the Ark of the Covenant after seven months, sending it back on a new cart with guilt offerings and letting the cows pulling it find their own way home to Beth Shemesh, a sign their priests read as unmistakably the Lord’s doing. The discussion contrasts the Philistines’ careful, almost reverent handling of the situation with Israel’s carelessness toward the Ark, including the sobering judgment on the men of Beth Shemesh for looking inside it, and the question the people are left asking: who can stand before such a holy God?

Proverbs 17:21–25 contrasts a fool with a righteous heart. The passage shows a foolish child bringing grief to a father on both ends, while a joyful heart is tied to keeping one’s mind set on the Lord rather than on circumstances. The wise are described as keeping their eyes fixed on wisdom while fools chase after earthly things, a parallel the discussion draws to Colossians 3’s call to set the mind on things above, and the passage closes with a warning about bribes taken in secret to twist justice, when true justice ultimately belongs to the Lord
