Declaring Environments: Compose, Nix, and the Agent Boundary
Episode 5773
Published 5 days, 20 hours ago
Description
A predictable, lightweight, automatic environment sounds like one idea. It's actually three families of tooling operating at different layers. This episode walks the line between Docker Compose and infrastructure as code, then asks the question underneath both: is this a container, or does it have to be a VM? Drawing on Docker's own documentation, numtide, Flox, Freestyle, and the devcontainer spec, we separate reproducible run-time environments from reproducible builds, lay out container orchestration, IaC, and declarative package managers as distinct approaches, and trace the container-versus-VM decision to where it actually lives — not in the image, but in where state is kept. Then we extend it into the agentic context: containerized runtimes, microVMs like Firecracker-backed providers, and OS-level isolators, and what each one buys you when the thing being provisioned isn't a person at a terminal but an agent that needs to remember.
