Episode Details

Today's reading covers 1 Samuel 5 and Proverbs 17:17–20. The reflection follows the Philistines as they carry the captured Ark of the Covenant into the temple of their god Dagon, only to find the idol toppled before it twice; then plague and panic break out across Ashdod, Gath, and Ekron until the Philistines are forced to send the Ark back. The discussion uses the episode to underscore that no god compares to the Lord, drawing on Exodus 15 and Psalm 89.

Proverbs 17:17–20 turns to friendship, financial wisdom, and integrity. It holds up the value of a loyal friend alongside a caution against co-signing someone else's debt, and it warns against lavish living and pride tied to wealth. The passage closes by reminding readers that a crooked heart and a dishonest tongue lead to trouble rather than good.
